Now that some Palm Springs California vacation rentals have joined the site – and book online – John and I were more than curious about this mythic Hollywood hangout. We wanted to see first-hand the resort rentals, take some pics, soak up the atmosphere. It’s only a 2 1/2 hour drive from LA and before we knew it, we were driving through desert wind farms and turning off I-10 at the Palm Drive Desert Hot Springs exit on to Gene Autrey Drive.
We arrived mid-week as the whole town of Palm Springs was preparing for the Dinah Shore Weekend Festival, an international party event for lesbians. At lunch at one of the many adorable eateries, we sat next to a single mom who came for a singles getaway not knowing about the Lesbian event. Her hotel moved her out to another one – as the pool had been booked all weekend.
We saw busloads of seniors on a day trip streaming into the theater where the dancers, singers, stage performers are all age 53 to 83 – also the age range of the audience. It’s the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies and the show has been running in Palm Springs for a gazillion years. A friend of mine goes there with the whole family just to hang out at the pool all day – and sip cocktails – and eat out. The point is that Palm Springs can be all things to all people.
If you love vintage autos, the streets of Palm Springs are a car show in themselves, not to mention the dealerships that specialize in classic cars. The town is a Fifties and early 60′s time machine. Furniture stores specialize in mid-century modern. Antique stores and photo galleries are filled with memorabilia of Hollywood’s great stars that vacationed here. It is Hollywood in the desert.
Walking it’s touristic streets, we noticed a lot of renovation going on. The buildings here getting a face lift, a new interpretation for a mid-century modern resort in a very different world. A hop, skip and a jump from LA, Palm Springs is an excellent get-away to another time and place. Check out our Book Online resorts in Palm Springs.
